Do you prefer for your readers to read your content on your own domain? Us too! We get it. We understand how important it is to brand your business, even if it's just the little things like using your own URL or domain.
Our custom domain feature allows you to embed our web-app on a domain of your choice, so your readers will see your domain in the browser (like read.examplemagazine.com) instead of our domain (e.g. www.magloft.com/app/examplemagazine).
The domain should *not* be the main domain of your website (like www.examplemagazine.com), but instead a sub-domain like read.examplemagazine.com. This is because the web-app is not meant to be a replacement for your website, but instead should be seen as a “section” of your website.
So how do you actually create a custom domain/URL for the web app?
To access this setting, you will need to go to Portal > Design Web App and click the Web App Settings blue button on the left side of the design:
After clicking the button, you should see a pop up with some of our Web App features. Scroll down until you see this:
If this setting is locked for you, then you would need to upgrade to one of our paid plan first. Check out our pricing plans here ;)
If you've already upgraded your account with us, that's awesome! First of all, you need to set up an A-Record for your domain name.
What's an A-Record?
Simply put, an A-Record will point your domain or sub-domain to a certain IP address (in this case, it will point out to your publication content that we host). If you'd like to read a more detailed explanation of an A-Record, DNSimple wrote a great article about that here.
How do you set up an A-record?
This will actually depend on where you register your domain! We've compiled a list of some of the most popular domain registrars with link on how to set up A-record on their domains:
Don't be scared of all the tech words, setting up an A-Record is actually easier than it looks! Although don't be shy to ask one of your tech guys to help if you're still not quite sure :)
The amount of information needed to set up an A-record varies slightly depending on the registrar, but this information on the red box below is all you need:
After you've finished setting up the A-Record, don't forget to write your URL on the Domain Name box and click Enable Domain:
Once you've clicked Enable Domain and everything is set up correctly, you will see a pop-up notification on the top right part of the page so you'll know that it's done!
Another option is also possible if you want to host the web-app on your own server. This means that you will have the content on www.examplemagazine.com/read/index.html instead of read.examplemagazine.com
In the same setting box, you can find the instructions to do this on the lower part of the box:
All you need to do is download the HTML file that was provided on the blue box:
And then upload the file to your server. After that, you can simply launch the web-app by going to the uploaded html file (http://www.examplemagazine.com/read/index.html)
Depending on your server configuration, you can also launch the web-app by going to www.examplemagazine.com/read/ (without the index.html at the end of the url), and the browser will still automatically load the index.html file. But note that you'll probably need help from one of your tech guys to check on this!
That is all! Now that wasn't too hard, was it? :D
